New York, NY – The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Commissioner Maria Torres-Springer and New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) President Eric Enderlin announced a call for applications to the latest Housing Connect lottery for 101 newly constructed affordable apartments at La Casa del Mundo located at 3475 Third Avenue in Morrisania, The Bronx.

Lottery applications are being accepted for 4 studio apartments, 22 one-bedroom apartments, 57 two-bedroom apartments, and 18 three-bedroom apartments.

Some rents will be as low as $368 a month for a studio apartment and $551 a month for a three-bedroom apartment.

"Each of the 101 affordable apartments in La Casa del Mundo represents an opportunity for a household to build a more secure future," said Maria Torres-Springer, HPD Commissioner.  "The deeply affordable rents in this newly constructed project reflect the work we are doing under Housing New York to serve extremely low-income and very low-income residents in Morrisania and neighborhoods across the city. I encourage eligible applicants to learn more about the affordable housing lottery process and apply."

“La Casa del Mundo will provide greater opportunity and quality of life to 101 low, very low, and extremely low-income households, while also fostering economic development in the Morrisania neighborhood thanks to the addition of new commercial space,” said HDC President Eric Enderlin. “I encourage all those eligible to apply on the Housing Connect website today for this and other available affordable housing opportunities.”

This building is being constructed under the Extremely Low & Low-Income Affordability (ELLA) program of HPD and HDC and will be affordable to extremely low-, very low- and low-income households. Eligible households include individuals earning as little as $14,503 annually; two- person households earning a minimum of  $15,532 annually; three- to four-person households earning a minimum of $18,515 annually; and five- to six-person households earning as low as $21,463 annually.

“I am excited to see 101 affordable units being added District 16. It’s imperative that affordable housing projects in our community be accessible to those currently living here and I am pleased to see the effort made by HPD and HDC to ensure these units are truly affordable,” said Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson. “I encourage all West Bronx residents, especially those living in Community Board 3, to sign up for Housing Connect and apply for this housing opportunity.”

Since its 2013 launch, NYC Housing Connect has simplified the city’s housing lottery process. The website allows New Yorkers to fill out a single online profile, which can be used to apply to multiple new housing lotteries. That profile can be saved and edited, eliminating the need to fill out individual paper applications for upcoming lotteries.

In October, 2016, Mayor de Blasio announced changes to the City’s handbook of marketing policies and procedures designed to ensure that City-assisted affordable housing reaches the New Yorkers who need it most. Important changes to the policies include ending developers and leasing agents’ ability to deny applications based solely on credit scores; new standards for homeless shelter referrals to account for special challenges faced by these households; strictly limiting the ability of landlords to deny an applicant based only on their exercising due process rights in housing court; and imposing limits on personal assets. These changes are the most recent in a series of adjustments by the de Blasio Administration to increase information accessibility and transparency to the housing lottery process.

Registered applicants are notified via email when new lotteries are posted to the Housing Connect site. Instructions on how to submit a paper application are also available, and listed in each housing lottery advertisement. Applicants may not submit both a paper application and a web application for the same project.
